If you contact Henry Diorio in Wilmington MA at 978 658 8841, he has the correct 12V field coils, and also replacement parts like brushes, brush springs, front bearings and rear bushings. If you are going to do this conversion yourself, you may want to get Vern Tardel's "Let me Help you" booklet #9, "Ford Generator, service & repair, 12 volt conversion. It is an excellent, illustrated how to do it information source for this conversion. [email protected]

I wanted to convert mine to 12V also but was told by one vendor that the 12 V field coils were no longer available, and I couldn't find a used 12V generator to get one from. I ended up ordering a remanufactured generator from Rock Auto (look for 1964 Galaxie 390 V8 - other years are the same), AC Delco 3341001. It only cost about $45 and I got it 3 days later, even with international shipping. I was planning to use it for parts, but when I disassembled it, the whole thing looked brand new. I just trimmed the rear housing to circular and used the old front housing and it worked out perfectly.

x3 on the 56-64 housing and armature. That's how I did mine.

That's a great idea, getting the reman Delco generator from Rock Auto. I checked, and they are still available for the same price and shows they were used on at least 1962-1964 Fords. They list them as Alternator/Generator for those who are not old enough to know what a generator is. I used a 1957 Ford 12 V generator for my 1st conversion, and am working on a 2nd on. On the 1st one, I used the 57 armature, barrel, (case) and end plate, the 21A-10139-A front mount, and pulley. All the armature shafts are the same diameter, along with the pulley threads. I would have liked to use the bushing end plate from the earlier units but if I recall the bearings were different, so I used the '57 end plate. I cutoff the later mounting flange on the rear. Question, does the early front mount like the 21A-10139-A fit the Delco reman unit ?

if it is a 3 brush the later field coils may not fit, the housing diameter is smaller than the 2 brush

If you don't mind the appearance this GM alt really
works great. You should have a 24 volt stator installed
so you can run the small stock pulley. With this it will
idle with the lights on and charge. G.M.

Im not understanding the 24 volt stator ? Is that to charge 12 volt at lower rpm ?
Iveused the chevy alt ( not one wire ) many times and like the simplicity and output.
Thanks

The 24 volt stator was suggested Chestnut Hill Electric Motor Co
so it would charge at idle with a small pulley. They have all the
parts in stock. located in Denver. Pa. G.M.
