Mitchell and 4.11
I have a 4.11 final drive ratio (now I know why it climbs in 3rd so well!) and I plan to install a Mitchell OD. Does anyone have any experience with either the 26% or 36% with a 4.11 final drive? I guess I could convert the final drive ratio if that makes more sense.

Re: Mitchell and 4.11
It would be the same thing with a 26% reduction on a stock 3.78 works fine for me. The 4.11 with a 36% reduction would be great in the mountains I would think and then you can have your 36% for flatland.

Re: Mitchell and 4.11
BigErn,
I have had a 4:11 with a 26% Mitchell in my driver (Phaeton) for over 80,000 miles. This combination has worked well for me over flatland and mountain passes. This past spring, I lost 2 teeth on the pinion and ordered a new 4:11 gear set to replace it. I did not even consider a different ratio. I have a 5.9 Brumfield head and a counter weighted crankshaft, so I have a little extra power and ability to rev to pull the car in and out of overdrive. With this combination, I have no trouble keeping up with the slow lane traffic on an interstate. I wouldn't - didn't change a thing. I would not go with the 36% unless you have the power to pull it and then also the desire to move that fast. I typically use overdrive as a 4th gear meaning I get up to speed and then put it in overdrive. When I come to a hill, I will drop out of overdrive and climb it. With the syncro in the overdrive, it is easy to shift up and down on the move. JMO Good Day! Last edited by Dave in MN; 10-03-2015 at 08:14 AM. |

Here are the speeds you will be going at 1500 RPM in high gear. With just your 4.11 gears 32.8 MPH With 4.11 and the 26% OD 44.3 MPH With 4.11 and the 36% OD 51.3 MPH I hope this helps. |

Re: Mitchell and 4.11
I run a Columbia which is 26%, and 4.11's, and I wouldn't change it. With the 36% you would be lugging the engine, not good!
