Default Oversize camshaft gears

I have seen advertised from time to time, camshaft gears [press on type] that may be stamped, say, .003 etc. Is this oversize/undersize on the outside dia, or in the bore? I've never bought one and measured it, so dunno? I would imagine it pertains to the bore measurement, or is it to suit engines that have been line bored, with the crank to cam centres being subsequently reduced by a few thou? Appreciate feedback from knowledgeable individuals, thanks, Brian

Not that I am knowledgeable, but I have bought and used o/s timing gears, and thought that they were intended for use with a slightly worn crank gear. They seem to take up considerable slack, that was evident with the original cam gear.

That is correct. I dought you could find one now. I used a NOS one that I had for years, a few yr's ago. You use to be able get over size and undersize for engine that been line bored and crank dropped a few .000. Walt

If you are looking for them try Jim at Specialty Ford in CA or Fred at South Side Obsolete in MN. Maybe Tracy in Arlington TX

If you are doing an in the chassis gear change, the crank gear is a bear to remove in the car. Usually the crank gear is worn some and the oversize cam gear will take up the backlash. If the engine is out of the car you might as well change both gear and you won't need a oversize cam gear. Walt
