Remove crank gear

I'm doing a complete timing gear change (worn cam gear, pitted crank gear), including the plunger spring in the timing cover due to the cam knocking sound. My question is, what's the preferred method for removing the old crank gear and installing a new crank gear? I realize I'll have to lift the engine slightly and drop the oil pan to get the old crank gear off. Am I likely to need major heat to get the crank gear off? Is there anything special about putting the new cam gear on?

I have a special KR Wilson puller made specifically for removing these. It may be possible to use a 3-jaw puller if you have the clearance, however you should keep a torch away from that area. Also, you should never use a hammer to install the gear onto the snout (when still installed) as it will be slamming against the thrust surface which will likely compress or crack the cast bearing material in that area. Excessive thrust clearance will cause a huge rear main hemorrhage. The best way to install the gear is to use the threads of the crankshaft snout to anchor a threaded rod into, -and then use a nut against a metal tube to draw it onto the crankshaft..

Use some heat before installing the crank gear, it will go on easier.
