Default "Im feelin bad vibrations"

I have a 50 2 door custom that I have been working on for about 8 months off an on. There is a vibration at higher speeds that I believe is caused by the front ujoint. I replaced both front and rear joints today and this helped however their is still the vibration but not as bad. After I put the new front joint in there is still some movement there. I believe that is the guilty culprit but not sure how to tighten this up since the retainers are on the inside of the caps. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated.

there should be no play in the u joint, if there is either the holes for the joint in the yoke are worn or the holes in the driveline for the joint is worn, are you sure you were given the right joint? if so you either need a new yoke or drive shaft

Does it have overdrive?? We had a '59 Ford F 100 w od that had a bad vibration and it was the od housing worn where the center bearing sets. Had to replace the housing.

I dont think that I have the wrong ujoint because it was a pretty tight fit up untill the last bit before the ring goes on. There is a worn place on the inside if the holes where it looks like about .005 of slop is present on all the 4 holes Im trying to think about some sort of a shim. It doesnt have over drive with it did.

Could be the drive shaft is out of balance, rare but s***t does happen. What makes you thing it's in the drive shaft? Could be one of a hundreds different things.

Most speed related vibrations come from the tires. Be certain that they are in serviceable condition before digging deeper.

You might try changing the rear bushing in the tailshaft. This will help save your mainshaft bearing as well.

I have had a similar vibration before in a ford p/u it feels the same I had another drive shaft laying aroun so I put it in and the vibs went away so I checked the shaft first and found the movement in the joints. Would I see movement in the tail shaft if the bushing is bad? I'll have to check that out. Thanks .

This happened to me and it was the front end that was vibrating.I went through everything in the rear, even elimnated tires as the culprit. But it was the front end so i replaced bushings, idler arm the works and it went away

Yes, a pretty firm push sideways will depress the seal and show any bushing slop.

A dirt-dobber nest inside a wheel can drive you to drinking! Not really something you would normally think of. James

A friend of mine bought a 47 Mercury Woody a number of years ago he asked me to look at it as it vibrated at about 35 MPH. He shipped it down to Florida and in about 45 minutes I suspected it was out of time. We pulled the timing gear cover and I looked in at the marks on the gears with a mirrow and it was one tooth off. We removed the cam gear and lined up the marks and no more vibrations
