Default HELP? Gas peeling paint at cap

I'm looking for something to put around the gas fill area to stop or prevent gas from peeling the paint. If anyone has had this problem or have a fix for it I would appreciate the information.

Thank You, Denver

Nothing will correct this. Likely nothing will prevent it either. Usually this is caused by vapor seeping under the paint that does not have a good mechanical adhesion in this area. Just live with it unless you are willing to strip the tank and repaint.

The area around the filler neck on my 155B was bubbled up and peeling really bad when I got it. I stripped the tank and repainted it. After a year it began to bubble again right under the cap. I punctured the bubble and injected super glue with a syringe. Then I pressed the bubble with my thumb cushoned by polyester batting (the glue won't adhere to the batting) until it cured. Then I sealed the paint/bare neck juncture with super glue. Seems to have held up for two years so far without further degradation.

I'm really careful about cleaning up gas splashes and I only fill the tank to about 7/8.

John,

I appreciate the tip about the super glue. I'll give it a try.

Thanks, Denver

When my pick up was painted 3 years ago the same thing happened, the owner of the paint shop contacted the paint supplier and they told him to smear some JB weld on the paint line to the filler neck. It cured the problem.

I had this problem when I first painted my tank. I found the neck is copper plated down a ways. Someone told me if I masked this copper plated area down to the first ledge and paint only to there it would not peal. I also, once it was dry and before any fuel was put in, I coated this area down to the paint and just over it with clear fingernail polish. Never had a problem in 6 or 7 years.
