Question Timing Gear number

The timing gears I use (laminated) have the number 2718L stamped on the center area. Yesterday I came across one that had an M rather than the L.

What is the difference other than the letter?

Gears with aluminum centers sometimes work loose between the two materials. I would choose a gear made entirely of one material.

This one does not have any aluminum exposed. I have some fine examples of the ones with the exposed aluminum and I'll bet you could hear the car coming.

I have an aluminum timing gear on a 41 chevy motor and it makes the worst sound, even louder than the rods at times.
