Modify floor boards
I am looking to find the article that shows how to modify the floor boards to make it easier to take the battery out. I am certain it was in one of the clubs magazine but which one and when ? Thanks for any help

Re: Modify floor boards
Rather than modify the floorboards, I would just leave the mounting screws out. That way it is easy to lift out the board. Actually I don't even worry about the battery because mine is over 12 years old and I've never had to remove it for any reason. Lifting out the board does make it easier to take pictures for the people that want to see how the speedometer cable runs, etc.

Re: Modify floor boards
I just ran across that article by Jim Moss in the July-August 1993 issue last week. The previous owner of my coupe gave me about 20 years worth of the "Restorer" magazine. Lots of great reading!

Re: Modify floor boards
Snyder's has a kit that allows you to remove half of the floor board (the drivers side). Works really well. Undetectable with the carpet in place.

I don't mind removing the floor boards. Maintenance is number one in my book. I grease the throwout bearing, Oil the pedal shaft, and just do a visual inspection of the moving parts. My floor boards are not screwed down they fit nice and tight.

Re: Modify floor boards
Screwing them down helps to keep the heat out of the cab.

Re: Modify floor boards
If you get the stainless screws, it's not really a big deal to take the floorboards out anyway.

Re: Modify floor boards
Consider purchasing an Optima Battery which needs no attention for ten years or so.

With the Snyder kit I mentioned above I just flip the carpet up on the drivers side and remove six screws to remove half the floor. I don't have to remove the trim rings. Last edited by Y-Blockhead; 10-04-2016 at 11:04 PM. |

Re: Modify floor boards
At one of the French Lick National Meets, someone on the grand tour in a fordor ran off the road on a downgrade, and rolled the car over. I was not there, but videos were posted here and elsewhere. After watching the videos, I realized that even in a gentle roll-over (if there is such a thing) my floor boards would fall out and rattle around inside the car with me; and worse, my battery, which was also not tied down, would dangle from its cables and beat me up with every swing. Now I know my Model A is not really the safest thing to be driving in a collision, but I think I should make efforts to keep it at least as safe as originally designed. The French Lick video prompted me to secure the battery and the floorboards for the first time since 1964.
I believe that securing the floorboards and the battery gives you a greater margin of safety, however slight. W. Michael |
