Default Radiator overflow

I have been losing cooling fluid through the overflow to the point that I can't see the fluid level through the top of the tank. I am not having overheating problems but would like to see the water level and thus know how much coolant I have.
I am considering installing a 2 lb. pressure release valve at the bottom of the overflow tube. Has anyone used this type of pressure release valve and would you recommend it? Any concerns about it?
I have some very slight seepage at the radiator filler cap and I have some concern that the pressure allowed by the pressure release valve would aggravate that situation. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Don't fill the radiator completely to the top. Fill only to where you can see the water reach the level of the tubes. In other words, leave room for expansion as the engine warms up.

I have a friend with a 1932 Ford and he installed a 3lb. check valve an it cured all his problems. The valve can be purchased from, [email protected], 1-941-637-6698 days or 1-941-505-9085 night. He advertises in the V-8 Times and many V-8 club guys use it.

Depends on the year of your old Ford. If the over flow tube comes off the top of the radiator then you need the 3 lb valve. If the over flow comes out of the filler neck of the radiator you need to check your pressure cap. For some reason most pressure caps the bottom sealing end don't hit and seat on the washer like seat down in the filler neck. The attached photo shows the rubber washer I use on the seat so the cap seals. A 4 lb cap is all that is required on most old Fords. If the temperature runs below 210 degrees and there is a pressure cap or the 3 lb valve you probly have a compression leak. Compression in the cooling will open the cap or valve and allow coolant to be released.
Ford made the cooling systems on most old Fords 22 quarts not 17 or 18 quarts. More water in the system equals better cooling. More water flow and more air flow through the radiator also equal better cooling.
With a WORKING pressure cap or 3 lb valve and NO COMPRESSION leak
you can fill the radiator up into the filler neck and it will stay filled 6 months or longer. Sorry Lawson you are living in the dark ages. G.M.
