You are probably talking about the later gears with improved syncronizers. If so, the '39-'48 gears are what you want. I would suggest picking up a copy of Mac Van Pelts transmission book. Will tell you everything you need to know about these early Ford transmission.

Here are some pictures of a transmission I built this past May for a friends '36 fordor touring sedan. Used his '36 case with serial # that matches frame & title, '40 - '48 pass car side loader gears that were in excellent condition, '39 top/tower, '36 shift lever, and '35-'36 rear mount/bearing retainer. Working like a charm in his '36.
I got to drive this '36 at the Gettysburg ENM in June, and felt that it shifts much better than my '35 Avatar fordor that still has its stock transmission. Also, I could not make this '36 jump out of second gear no matter what I did, like my '35 jumps out of second now. Will be making this same gear change on two of my '35's as soon as possible.

I am running a '39 tr4anny in my '35 as I heard the same. Truthfully I didn't notice that much of a difference in the way it shifts. You definitely want to consult Van Pelt prior to any purchases as I know there are differences internally. I.e. the case on the 39 is significantly different and has the shift tower about 2 inches removed from where it was on my '35. Also the shifter is a different configuration both where it goes into the tower and meshs with the forks and it's shape for clearance is different..
