Default Temp sensor port thread chaser

Been searching the inter webs for a thread chaser or thread restorer for 59a temp sensor ports on the heads. Can’t seem to find one in 3/8 in-18 thread pitch. Anyone have any leads on where i can buy one?

Try a pipe thread. Be careful not to go too deep, they are tapered.

Disclaimer; I am not 100% intimate with late model flatheads....
However...are you sure its NPT [National Pipe Taper]? I thought it was NPP [National Pipe parallel]. I thought the female thread [in the head] was parallel, and the male thread [the temp probe] is tapered, so that the more you tighten it up, the tighter it gets, thus sealing.

Believe me, the MALE tapered thread WILL get tighter, the deeper it goes into a FEMALE tapered thread. DD

Make sure the tap is made of HSS (High Speed Steel) not HC (High Carbon)

When I needed one for my 8ba I bought a set at Harbor Freight for cheap. May not be the highest quality but chased the threads on the head no problem.

so next question on engine ports, on each side of the block behind water pumps there are threaded ports for either threaded plug (like on my other bare block) or drain pet cocks for the water jackets. Should I plug them or use pet cocks? what size are those threads normally?

Yes, but if you tap the tapered female thread TOO deep, the hex on the male nipple will bottom out, preventing the threads from forming a seal

I would go with plugs, less chance of leaks. Make sure to use neversieze so you can get them out. Not sure on the size but thinking 1/4 npt.
