back in the 50s i worked for a short time in a cadilllac dealer,those mid 50s cars had high compression most of the car we serviced were driven in the city they had a product called carbasol witch we used. to remove the carbon,

diesel thats a new one but i'll bet there where a lot less mozzyies around back to subject high idle a spray bottle and a mix of mentholated spirits [10%] and water engine up to operating temp and slowly spray it down the carb neck but still doesn't "beat blowing out the carbon" every chance you get

Fun yes, but the police around here don't know what de-carbonizing the engine means, and certainly are not sympathetic.
