Galvanising Wheels
Happy New Year to Everyone. Has anyone any experience of galvanising Model A or similar wheels? I'm not sure how the heat involved in the process could affect the wheel but there would never be the need to treat rust on those difficult to access inside spokes again! If I did get mine galvanised I would then paint them - even if my paint application was not 100% the galvanising would prevent corrosion.
Cheers, Gavin |

Re: Galvanising Wheels
What will it cost do hot dip each of them?
I would think if you do a good job of cleaning the wheel to start with, and don't "over-restore" the wheel with paint & substrates like 90% of most hobbyists do, you likely won't experience what you are trying to overcome. |

Re: Galvanising Wheels
Paint doesn't adhere well on galvanised surfaces, I don't recommend it for that reason.

Re: Galvanising Wheels
In the construction industry handrails and many exterior items are galvanized and the finish is rough.

Re: Galvanising Wheels
Good two pack primer and paint will be enough to protect your wheels. Wheels deteriorated because they were not washed and left out in the weather. Now that people have restored their A's, they get washed and cleaned, so there is no build up of dirt, and this will keep corrosion to a minimum.

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED POWDER COATING? LOOKS GREAT, PROTECTS BETTER THAN PAINT AND PROBABLY A LOT CHEAPER.

Re: Galvanising Wheels
The bike shop told me if I want stronger spokes, don't buy the galvanized ones. Something about the process weakens the spokes, and I've had several broken spokes on my motorbike. A well painted wheel will outlive all of us.
