Default Steering Worm Pitted and Sector Worn

I am going to rebuild my 2-Tooth Gremmer steering box because of the pitted steering worm and worn sector. All that I see available in the catalogs are "foreign made" and "good quality ....... best available". For some reason I do not get warm fuzzy feelings about the quality of these replacement parts. Does anyone have experience with these parts, or is there a better way to go when rebuilding the steering box? Any true NOS laying around that I have not seen that might be available?

I have purchased my worm and sectors from Snyders and have had good luck on the three rebuilds I have done. I also save myself the potential grief and buy the shaft with the worm already on it, as I don't have a large press and have heard of shafts getting bent with over zealous pressure.

Elcastor,The quality is just fine.Trust me you will never wear them out.Listen to what Greg said and buy things already pressed together.I went to 4 machine shops till I found one that would press the worm on the shaft. When I picked it up was told they told me that was there first and last to do that job, they had a terrible time holding the shaft to press on the worm gear.

I have used the rebuild kit from Macs.it worked very well, however pressing the worm on the steering shaft was a real task!

Do not know about the quality of the repro parts. Did find some interesting details about the bushings the suppliers sell, they are too large to work right.

Here is my findings on steering: Steering

I tried to put my own worm gear on got it hot and froze the shaft. then I used a heavy pot holder to drop the worm on the shaft. It was about half on before it stuck and that's where it is now. Also the pot holder caught fire that was fun. So I don't what to do now.

Thanks for all the good advice. I am glad to hear that the repro parts are ok. Richard, what else do you do for entertainment while restoring/working on your car?
