Smile Brakes Discoveries

As I begin to investigate my brake linkages etc. I have found two interesting things as shown in the attached pictures...

1. The mountings for the cross shaft to the frame have two 1/4" steel plate spacers at each bolt creating a 1/2" shim at those four locations. Any idea why someone would do this?

2. The rod from the brake pedal to the cross shaft is rubbing on the bottom of the hole in the cross member, evidently a result of the shims described above. Also, the rod from the pedal extends past the clevis and hits the cross member. This may be a welded extension(?). Again, why would someone do this?

Thanks

That little extension is to actuate the frame mounted brake light switch on a 1930-31.
The shims may be because the frame has sagged and the cross shaft was hitting the torque tube.

Thanks Bob C. In looking at past postings, I see a trend related to sagging frames and cross shaft interference. The rod from brake pedal to cross shaft must be from a newer car, mine is a 29.

I was wrong on the brake rod. The one pictured was used from June 1928
through September 1929.

Bob C. Should the brake rod be hitting the cross member?

Does the car sag on the drivers side? This would be a good reason for the problem. I believe the quote in #3 has hit the nail on the head.
