If I was selling a car and wanted it to give a good impression, I'd make sure the air cleaner was installed. (And not one of them itty-bitty aftermarket chrome ones either.)

I was watching Scotty Kilmer the other night on YouTube, the mechanic dude that has advice on all sorts of cars and mechanical issues. I don't fully agree with every single thing he says, but fun to listen to him.

Anyway, he spoke of a guy he knew that just bought a used Tesla with 15K miles on it. The original owner paid $125,000 for the car and three years later sold it for $40,000 to the guy Scotty knows.

$85,000 depreciation

So I guess a few thousand more than book on that '36 Ford Coupe,,, hey if it is in really good shape and you like the car, what the heck!

But for $38K I would be looking at finding a three window coupe and pony up a little more cash instead!

For $38K I don't want droopy door handles. If you want a five window look for a 40 Ford.
They have "the classic look" and are always in demand.

What Kube says!!

That is how I always look at these things. Buy something for 20K. Use it and enjoy it for a few years and sell it for 16K. So it cost you 4K plus the maintenance, insurance, etc. for those years. Did you have 4K worth of FUN???

I say hell yeah! (most of the time anyway.... )

Now I like the way Heard thinks! That is way mor in line with reality! But what he says about the fun factor is right on the money! I am old enough that I dont want this next project to be my last project and I dont want to store these like a fine wine! Somewhere in between I want to enjoy them have others get enjoyment from them and make them just a little better than when I found them!

I feel better now! Thanks!

Regards,
Chris

Definitely the wrong motor, it's the later flathead. It also has a rumble seat and I consider that wasted space. They are a PIA if you are going to use the car for touring and need to load luggage, portable chairs, etc. It also comes down to good sheet metal with nice original floor pans and no patch panels. At $38,000 I would pass on it.

Different animal, but this may help you to negotiate or gauge the value of the car you are looking at.

The more you look at the pictures of the maroon '36 more faults can be noted. The cream wheels, hub caps and white side walls really look dumb. No accessories, radio, heater, and pin-stripping, decrease the value. It would seem that someone that went to all of the trouble to redo the car would have used a correct 221 LB engine. Maybe they did not know the difference.. The Collector Car Price Guide would indicate the car is a #3 $18,400. The '36 Club Cabr listed on craigslist NY is right on the # 3 CCPG $27,000 listing.

Pretty car but looks like you could do much better, continue the search process. My 36 is pretty darn nice after paint and interior re-do and I would be shocked if it brought $30k. The market for these cars is getting smaller as the younger generation does not care about them like us old farts! lol...

Go for the cabriolet. A rarer car, has a back seat and a real trunk. At $30,000 it might also be negotiable. It's also closer to being an original restoration.

I've had my wife for 55 years now. She totalled my '57 Dodge so I figured I'd have to marry her to get my moneys worth.

How much do you figure she's worth at todays prices?

After all these comments, I'd say lenmissy has a pretty good general idea of how to move on this!

Good replies.

Do you guys ever go by the NAPA antique and classic car guide? I haven't looked at that in several years but the prices always seemed pretty high.

One last thing. I learned late last nite of a friend who had just died of liver cancer. He was 55. I visited with him about four weeks ago, I hadn't seen him all winter. I did think he had gotten pretty thin, but he never said anything to me about his ailment. And he never complained. Others that knew him said he kept real quiet about it they didn't know either. He went out like a man I honor him for that.

My point being in this little story, if you want it you'd better get it because time is running out for all of us. That day will come. As Jim Morrison of The Doors always said 'No one gets out of this alive'.

It's like if you are a golf guy. If you quit playing golf you can't get your green fees back. But you had fun! Most times you even up or more if you fix it a bit and buy well.

Looks like a nice car. I would do a compression check on the engine. Well I would want it running for that price. But looks like a solid car. Have fun!

That is a really nice car that the owner may very well have 38,000 into but like others said, the market is not there. You have some bartering points. If you could be sure of the quality of the mechanical restoration it might be worth a few dollars more. I'm helping a friend fix his Model A that he thought he got a good deal on. I just replaced the cam gear. Found the front motor mount broke and half ass fixed. The pan was leaking so replaced that gasket. It still made a noise and now find the distributor seized up. He is physically not able to work on his car and depends on others. If you add up what someone would charge to do what I have done the deal is not quite as good.
The saying, buy the best car you can afford, is quite good advice.
