Default F100 oil pan has no baffle/shelf?

I was surprised to discover that my 53 F100 V8 oil pan has nothing inside. Except for the small angle brace at right front. Is this normal?

42 Merc - thanks for the information. I'm replacing the stock 8RT engine with a 53 Merc. Does anyone know if this will fit? The pans have similar profiles at the bottom, but the merc pan has a little more sump toward the front. I can mock-up the fit with a short block but maybe someone has experience and knows the answer?

the 52 & 53 Mercury cars used the center sump just like the ford cars. The 49 though 51 used the rear sump pans. Those stair step pans were a one year only deal for 1953 pickups. Most of the pickup & truck pans didn't have any baffles. The Mercury set up was a good one. The oil pump pick up even had a blocking plate built in to help hold the oil in the sump area.
