Default Replacing Rear Drum Seal

I am in the process of installing new emergency brake lining and while things are apart I would like to change the grease seal in the rear drums. What is the easiest way to pull the old seal out? Thank you, Ed

There's an inexpensive tool called a seal puller that works best.

I just use a tire iron or large screwdriver.

We pull a lot of seals out of rear brake drums when we do brake jobs. The best and easiest way to pull / pry a seal is to use a tire iron or crowbar and put a block of metal or even a block of wood that is a little taller then the seal in the center of the bearing and use it instead of the edge of the hub. You can damage the edge of the hub. Seals are an one time part and will not come out intact. You might have to tap the tire iron or crowbar into the seal to get a good grip.

This photo was posted on fordbarn a number of years ago. The tool was made from the tapered end of a discarded Model A axle or drive shaft. The tool is inserted into the taper of the drum and used as a platform to assist the crow bar to pull the seal out.

So simple, it is genius.

I use a big screwdriver to remove the seal. Brattons and other suppliers sell a tool to install the new seal to exactly the correct depth.

After pulling the lock ring drop the drum assembly from a couple feet above the floor onto a piece of cardboard and the momentum of the bearing will push the seal out. May take several drops and even a bit of a push when dropping to get them out.
Hardest part is getting the lock ring out. Use a small screw driver to pry one end of the lock ring out a bit and at the same time place an awl in behind the lock ring to keep it out and work your way around.

Tricks of the trade my friend, tricks of the trade! Not sophisticated but very workable and time tested! Wayne

Yeah, getting them in to the correct depth was more difficult than the removal.

If the seal has worn a grove in the axle housing it can be spaced out a bit to find a better spot for it.

I do that on just about every rear end I have done. (usually 2-3 mm is enough)
