Default 272 starter

I normally hang out on the flathead forum, however, have a question for you boys into the late model Fords....I have picked up a 272 starter motor. It has three field windings, the third one being a bit smaller than the other two. Never seen this configuration before....question, would it be 12 volt or 6 volt?Thank you, Brian

Most early ford starters have two fields and 4-brushes but holding coil types started to show up in the 50s with 12-volt. They have two fields with large wire and one fine wire field in parallel. The fine wire one is sort of a shunt coil and is generally used to limit rotational speed of the motor. Some are referred to as holding coils. From 1956 with 12-volt systems, the 3 field set up was used. They still had 4-brushes but they added 1 extra field.

Thank you Rotor...I'm wanting to build a 12 volt starter for a flattie, so will use this case with a flathead armature and should be good to go... thank you.
