Hi Guys, has anyone cut and rejoined the horn rod as I need to replace my steering wheel in my '30 coupe and I DONOT want to remove the steering column and box. And if you have HOW DID YOU RE JOIN IT? Many thanks if you can help here. John Spragg. Australia.

Re: Horn Rod
Hello John,
I've removed the horn rod and tightened the steering wheel nut without any problems, so I'm not sure why you would need to cut the horn rod? Do you have the red Les Andrews book? You usually do need a puller for the steering wheel as far as I know, because it sits quite tight on the shaft. Have a nice day, Daniel |

Re: Horn Rod
A coupe won't give enough room to pull the horn rod without removing the entire column. It's a steel tube so you could potentially weld it back together but that would be just as difficult as removing the column, if not more.

Oh, right.
Owning a roadster, I completely forgot about the problem with interior space. |

Re: Horn Rod
You can remove the gas tank /column lower bracket & loosen the steering box bolts on the frame enough to tilt the steering column out the driver's door to remove the horn/light switch rod w/o cutting it in order to remove the steering wheel. I have cut & shortened an original horn rod, they are steel and silver soldering works great. It took me about 3 tries of laying the 2 pieces in a piece of angle iron to get it straight and the light switch lever/square bottom end clocked together. Good luck.

Re: Horn Rod
Before you loosen the column wrap the exposed painted column so you don't skin it up.

Re: Horn Rod
It takes less then an hour to remove the steering column from the car, and will take far more then an hour to figure out a good way to weld the horn rod back together. Just pull the steering column and save yourself a lot of time and effort.
