Default 1940 Ford coupe ashtrays

Wondering why. My first car in the 50's was a 1940 Ford DeLuxe Coupe. My dash ashtrays had the little opening handle on the bottom of the door. I see them with the knob on top of the door. Whats up? Henry economizing?

Design change. First design had the lids with the knob at the bottom. Push the lid in and up.
Second design had the knob at the top. Simply pull out...
