Need an education on '37 interior handles
I'm trying to figure out which handles I want to use on my '37 Coupe, but there seems to be several versions from Ford, and I'm not sure what was used in what.
I have 3 versions, shown. I've seen plenty of the plain unplated ones, like on top, but the green coated one and brown coated ones, not so much (the green one looks weird, IMO). I've also seen the chrome ones, which I didn't have handy for the picture. So what handles were used in what body styles? I really like the brown ones as they seem to have an almost wood look to them that matches the wood painted dashes. I have 3 NOS ones, but I'm lacking one door handle. |

Re: Need an education on '37 interior handles
The bottom two handles are for '37 deluxe body types. the green one likely started out with a brown finish and has deteriorated to a considerable extent. The standard body types had chrome-plated interior handles. Your top handle appears to lack any finish or plating.

Carpenter Reproductions sells the knobs for the inside handles as a separate item.

David, thank you very much for that information. The green one has a very shiny surface, so I assumed it came that way, but maybe not. I've seen and have a number of the plain ones. I thought maybe they came on the standard line of cars. Not sure why they are that way then, because they obviously were produced this way. I'm really wanting to use the Deluxe versions, so need to find another. Those don't appear to be reproduced, but I much prefer original parts anyway, if at all possible. |

Re: Need an education on '37 interior handles
RG130, that is a beautiful interior! I have a NOS set of vintage Ford belts, much like yours, that I'll be adding to the car. I also have a very clean '37 Deluxe banjo wheel that I plan on using. I know it's not correct for the car, but I like it so I'm going to use it.
Couple questions on your dash. Who did you have paint the 'wood' grain on it and your window surrounds? And how did you restore the chrome strips on your radio delete panel? Those are very hard to find in good shape, and mine have some pits. Is replating the only answer? |

cjshaker,
I agree that finding NOS '37 deluxe inside handles is a challenge, especially the door handle. I used them on my restoration of a cabriolet, but that was years ago. Carpenter reproduced both the standard and deluxe handles and still does. They are listed in their on line catalog as "in stock". |

The bottom "door" handle in your picture looks like a 1940 deluxe. If you look at the back side, a 1940 is beefier and needs a larger hole in the escutcheon.

fordyford, son of a gun you're right. I had not noticed that. Little things like that drive me nuts. Looks like I need 2 door handles.
David, thanks, I didn't realize they were available. I'm only using repro parts if I absolutely have to. Just a personal preference. Of course there won't be any other choice on certain items. |

Re: Need an education on '37 interior handles
You should be able to find original '37 standard inside door handles and window cranks. I know Michael Driskell has a box of them, I have some DeLuxe originals.

Re: Need an education on '37 interior handles
Seth, I have a few of the chrome ones, but I just prefer the coated Deluxe style. They just seem to fit the interior decor better. Got several of the unplated ones also, but I don't see them as being much good unless they were chromed, which wouldn't be worth the cost. I'm still unsure why they were even produced that way.
