I just wrap a log chain around the spring several wraps and cut the bolt with a torch while its laying on the floor. No big explosion, works great

As stated above, not all all-thread rod is the same. One needs an alloy, heat-treated, all-thread. ASTM A193 Grade B7 threaded rod is Medium Strength with a yield strength of 105000 psi. I am not sure if that would be up to the task. SAE J429 Grade 8 is 130000psi yield strength (120000psi proof strength). Avoid plated all-thread, it may be subject to hydrogen embrittlement. I don't think a hardware store is going to have high strength all-thread rod. Twice in my career I have seen a high strength alloy pull rod break. Luckily no one was hurt. But a nut launched after a break has the ability to kill someone. So be careful!!
