As an engine rebuilder, I ask all of my customers to remove the distributor and pour at least one quart of oil into the hole in the cylinder head which will fill the valve chamber with oil. This ultimately feeds oil to the main bearings. Add the other quarts into the oil pan. Reinstall the distributor. If you can crank the engine over with the starter while having the spark plugs removed, this allows the connecting rods to pass thru the dippers forcing oil into the rod journals. This is a great time to check the ignition timing to ensure it is correct. Once the engine has started, allow it to run above idle long enough to build enough heat in the engine where it is warm to touch on the outside. Allow the engine to return to ambient temperature. Re-torque the cylinder head and re-start the engine. Repeat the same cycle however this time increase the RPMs of the engine in cycles. Once the engine has run for 3-5 minutes, shut-off the engine and allow to come to room temperature again. Re-torque the cylinder head nuts. Correct any oil leaks and do a thorough nut & bolt tension check. Then enjoy... |
