I had to replace a shock link today so i took a screw with a rounded head to lock the bottom in place on the perch ball which will also compress the spring for fitting the top on the shock arm ball. Once the shock arm ball was started on the brass cup i removed the plug and the screw with a pencil magnet. Then used a channellocks to snap it on the ball the rest of the way. Use the end plug to adjust the tension as needed.. protect the link from marring it with the channelocks using a thick towel..

The screw stayed positioned nicely cause the point of it sat into the hole in the brass cup, the rounded head worked perfect for the underside of the threaded plug. The screw i used is an inch long

I have yet to see any Ford Script channel locks used at the Factory.

Yes it might appear to be easier to install the bottom first (using a large rubber hammer and a liberal dose of 'Navy Language') I stopped fighting it and installed the top first. It is necessary to grease all the link internal pieces in place BUT the link will snap into place without much effort.

IF the link is slanted at an angle, the lower brass cup has shifted and you need to try again.

"How did they do it at the Factory??"
