Removing crank gear - engine in car
I need to get my crank gear off. It needs to be replaced as a result of pitting. The cam gear is being replaced with an aluminum one. Is it necessary to completely remove the rear engine mounts to be able to lift the front of the engine sufficient to get the crank gear off? I've already done all the preliminary work at the front of the car - rad removal, front motor mount, timing cover, etc.. I'm supporting the front of the engine with an engine hoist. I know I have to remove the oil pan.
Although I'm hopefully I can remove the crank gear with a puller is it OK to use heat to remove the gear if the puller can't do it on its own? Will a propane torch be sufficient heat or does is require oxy/acetylene? Finally, is it safe to remove the front spring shackles to get at the crank pulley bolt? Ken Eastern Ontario |

Leave a loose bolt in mounts.
The engine needs to come up fairly high . It'll take a real puller to get the gear off, heat helps. Do Not drive the new gear on. It'll beat up the babbitt. I push them on with a trimmed piece of pipe, washers and different length bolts. Heat also is your friend here too. |

Re: Removing crank gear - engine in car
I think replacing the timing gear will be 10 times more difficult to do without pulling the motor out of the car. The cam should also come out so you don't damage the fiber timing gear in the process, and once it is out the tappets will all drop out. If this motor had water sitting in there long enough to pit the steel timing gear, it needs to be cleaned out good and everything inside inspected and replaced as needed which is much easier with the motor flipped over. Once the crank is removed you will have complete access to mount a gear puller and remove that gear. The motor in my '29 had a pitted timing gear, and the distributer drive gear was also pitted so badly it would have probably chewed up the cam gear if I didn't replace it. Just my 2 cents worth.

Just pull the engine. It’s not a big deal. It sounds like you’re half way there anyway.
