Changed starter, now have noise from flywheel
I recently put a rebuilt starter from NAPA on my 289 engine (67 mustang) and now after I start the car I have a loud noise coming from the flywheel area. It sounds like metal on metal kind of a clanking, squeaking noise. I did not have this problem before I replaced the starter.
I have the car up on the lift and removed the inspection plate. I rotated the flywheel and made sure all the nuts on the torque converter were tight and that the flywheel was not loose. All seems good there. It does appear that the nuts that hold the converter to the flywheel have made contact with something as they are slightly worn on the edge. I also see where something has made contact with the bearing on the starter drive as there are scuffs and scratches there. Any ideas what might be happening and why? FYI- 289 engine, C4 automatic transmission Thanks, Seth Last edited by Seth Swoboda; 07-19-2012 at 02:09 PM. |

Re: Changed starter, now have noise from flywheel
I've seen that thin plate on the back of the engine get pushed back or bent from the starter housing being cocked a bit when bolted up. That'll make it rattle on the converter bolts.

Re: Changed starter, now have noise from flywheel
Update:
I got the problem fixed. They do make a shim for the Ford starter. I put the shim behind the starter and problem solved. Easy $5 fix, that almost never happens! |

I don't have a 289 but that is good to know for future reference. Did you get the shim at NAPA also?
