Bob Drake Repro 1940 Gas Tank - what sending unit to use?
I needed a new gas tank and got the repro one from Bob Drake. The factory 1940 sending unit doesn't fit. Any ideas or experiences on what sending unit to use. Car is stock '40 Ford Sedan with 6 volts. The work is being done at a shop, so I can't take pictures currently.

It clearly states in his catalog that the tank will not accept the original sender. You need his 99A-9275 Fuel Sender.

Thanks, I ordered it over the phone looking at the item online, so I missed that. I called Drake and the senders are out of stock and will be back in 2 - 4 weeks.

I do not have an answer for you in regard to what you might utilize instead. Just be forewarned, the repop unit is junk.

If the original is still good, there must be some way of adapting it to the new tank. Up to and including cutting the mounting flange out of both tanks and welding the old flange onto the new tank.

Re: Bob Drake Repro 1940 Gas Tank - what sending unit to use?
You have the tank and read the comments. How did you get the tank without the sender? I just bought some cheap tanks at the LA Roadster. The idea is to find the best candidate to for my car. No way I ever ship such a piece, nor will guarantee the things. I've had good luck with caustic chemicals and acids under my control. If your chemistry is weak, forget such a process. The rodders out here often just go with a replacement and toss the old ones without any consideration of the condition. If the old tanks make it to any swap meet they are poorly received and cheap. I guess that's too late for your situation. Good Luck: Fred A

I ended up finding the sender at Joe's Antique Auto Parts (before I saw Kube's post). Hopefully it will work. Thanks for the replies.

The sending unit does seal the hole in the top of the tank. It at least does that well.

Re: Bob Drake Repro 1940 Gas Tank - what sending unit to use?
There is always a way to adapt but it may take ingenuity to get it done. Most reproduction tanks are made for modern type Ohmic based senders. The original current pulse systems are not available so they don't make tanks to fit them at all. This is unfortunate but a fact of supply and demand thinking. Ohm based senders will not correlate directly to OEM King Seeley indicator function so a person would have to find a modern ohm based indicator to fit the instrument panel to get the new system to function as it should. Customizers & street rodders just replace all the gauges with some modern stuff that completely changes the panel appearance or they make a custom panel. The new tanks cater to resto-mod folks more than for restorers that want OEM throughout.
