Default 46 mercury

hey guys i am in the process of building a Mercinstine of a truck it started as a 46 mercury and i have placed the body on a 01 f350 frame and running gear with a 7.3L diesel

my question is can i use the factory 46 fuel gauge with a modern sending unit?

i have wired a voltage reducer inline with my twelve volt power to only allow 6V to the gauge ...

if i tap the power to the gauge momentarily it dose move so i know it should work ..

So we can not lend a helping hand to a fellow enthusiast just because he is going a different direction than we might, really !

To answer the O/P's question about the fuel gauge. No, it won't work.. I'm no expert on pre-49 cars, but I believe the '46's used King-Seeley type gauges. They work in a completely different manner than modern gauges. You can leave now and find a more appropriate forum. It will be in everyones best interest.

Ya, let's not share any of our knowledge with anyone unless they are vetted first, must be a card carrying "Stock " Ford restorer !!! That way when we all pass, all the knowledge goes with us !!!

The boss makes the rules and they are posted first in line. The HAMB is for the hot rod crowd and this forum is mainly for the more stock types with mild improvements for driveability. Plenty of hot rodders frequent this sight but most also frequent the HAMB. The information that was asked for was dealing with stock components so that is appropriate in my way of thinking.

No modern senders are calibrated to work with the old King Seeley systems. A person would have to use a King Seeley sender and drop the input voltage to the circuit but it should work OK in that respect. A modern gauge could be substituted if a person is careful with the gauge cluster when disassembling and fabricating for a good fit.

I assume this is a Canadian Mercury truck cab going on a later model frame but it was not really made apparent by the author of the thread. If it's a Mercury car then it would likely fit the Mercenstein description better.

OK, guys, we know he needs an auxiliary fuel gauge in his under the dash cluster, so the answer is "No, not your best option, so ignore that and move on to what the heck are you trying to create here....but we support your effort completely!!!" (What the Hell!!)....and right on Seth....probably we're not the best resource to tap!!! (We are, however, a legend in our alleged minds.!!)

What a sorry couple of responses on this thread. Goodness, some of us are too concerned with 'rules' to bother READING the original question before enforcing some sort of ritual rejection of anything not meeting purity standards.

Kudos to all that insisted on rising above.

46mercury, apologies on behalf of the forum. We'll try to be better next time if you give us another chance.

Thanks Forty Niner for stepping in....I was just trying to catch my breath as I was quite frankly "floored" by those responses. A simple answer to the question could have avoided perhaps creating the image in 46mercury's mind that we "Barners" are just a bunch of "whip dicks."

I stand by my response. The remark about finding another forum was made in all seriousness. It may sound like a barb, but it wasn't meant to be.

Yup, because many other forums would have a wealth of experience matching '46 fuel guages with a new sending unit. You know, the type of sending unit one might be forced to use if your original unit was non-functional.

Chasing away new members can only result is a lesser future for us all.

I support your being on here and believe that I can support peoples opinions that are different from my own regarding the direction of their hobby interests.

Sorry I don't have any useful info on your question.

I did not mean to get everyone's panties in a bunch, I just thought if we have the knowledge, why not share it, no matter what they r building. I love to talk shop with anyone who will listen !
