Very slight backfireing through the exhaust when backing down is normal from high RPMs. It may mean a slight rich condition, which if not overdone, would be a good thing. Slight hesitaion may be adjusted with accelerator pump adjustmant. Blame both on crappy gas. If you buy a carb rebuild kit, try to get one with a leather accelerator pump. They can be reconsituted year after year with a few drops of motor oil worked in with your fingers.

My 55 has been backfiring for several years, but only when you let off the gas on the highway. My valves are adjusted perfectly and she runs smooth as can be. I believe the backfiring on mine could be because I had to weld on new pieces of exhaust pipe ahead of the glass-paks some while back and the weld might not be continuous all around, thus allowing for introduction of outside air.

BTW, it wouldn't make a difference whether your transmission was standard or Ford-O-Matic. But it might make a difference if you had a modern automatic. Letting off the gas by itself doesn't seem to have the effect of the engine compression slowing down the rear wheels with a modern automatic.
