Re: 55 Back fires
Very slight backfireing through the exhaust when backing down is normal from high RPMs. It may mean a slight rich condition, which if not overdone, would be a good thing. Slight hesitaion may be adjusted with accelerator pump adjustmant. Blame both on crappy gas. If you buy a carb rebuild kit, try to get one with a leather accelerator pump. They can be reconsituted year after year with a few drops of motor oil worked in with your fingers.

Re: 55 Back fires
BTW, it wouldn't make a difference whether your transmission was standard or Ford-O-Matic. But it might make a difference if you had a modern automatic. Letting off the gas by itself doesn't seem to have the effect of the engine compression slowing down the rear wheels with a modern automatic.
