Default 56 Leaking power steering

Just bought a 56 Fairlane 2 dr hardtop with 292 engine. Great car except power steering cylinder is leaking fluid. Any thoughts about cures, repairs, rebuilds, replacements ?? I was told that leaking is a fairly common problem -

Thanks in advance

I also have a 1956 For Fairlane it is the seals that are leaking for a temp fix you can use lucas power steering stop leak. It will be leaking from the power steering control valve and the power cylinder. Rebuilding kit cost around they cost around $35.00. from www.joblotauto.com
I bought a new one for $169.00 a copule of year ago. as far as the power steering control valve a rebuilt one cost $296.00 you need to shop around. try www.denniscarpenter.com if you decide to replace both units you will need to replace all four hoses around $125.00.

Good Luck
Rich

I have seen what I consider outrageous prices to repair these parts. This year, a company called Lares Corperation has been advertising in Old Cars Weekly. I sent my control valve to them and it came back like new for half what the others have been asking. Call them at 1-888-280-6387, or see them at www.larescorp.com I had fast service.

I rebuilt the control valve on my 69 Torino. It wasn't very hard to do. I got my kit at NAPA. I don't know if yours is similar or not.

A warning on 50's and possibly 60's Ford power steering. Use only ATF which what the cars originally had. Do not use power steering fluid as the viscosity in this stuff causes leaks. I possible cure if yours is leaking and you used power steering fluid is to change it back to ATF. Do it as thoroughly as possible.
