CLutch Chatter
My '28 Sport Coupe with a standard clutch plate and flywheel experiences clutch chatter when I go forward or reverse from a standing start. What is the possible cause(s) of this? Thanks.

Re: CLutch Chatter
Oil contamination of the clutch disk is one possible cause.
Did this just begin or is the car new to you?

This most likely can be confirem with more info, i.e.-like is equipment 'original'; have you had an oil leak/drip/running from bottom of bell housing cotter hole; do you have grease 'zerk' on trans shaft collar..and othergreased it ? If you have NEw equipment/rebuilt lately...adjustment of linkage and/or pressure plate out of adj specs. Last edited by hardtimes; 04-30-2016 at 12:48 PM. Reason: ......... |

Re: CLutch Chatter
I had serious clutch chatter, and it turned out to be a seriously out of tolerance pressure plate .045) out.
Changed the clutch plate and the pressure plate. Then I have smooth sailing.

Re: CLutch Chatter
I have clutch chatter on my huckster. To help getting started, I will sometime put the spark lever all the way up and that seems to cut down on the chatter. This may help you till you find out what to do from hers.

Re: CLutch Chatter
Minerva chattered! For a month, I took off only in second (no chatter) & after that, she was smooth as SILK!

Re: CLutch Chatter
Might be the way you drive it too, don't rev up and slip the clutch like a modern car.

Re: CLutch Chatter
If you see oil on the clutch while looking thru the inspection plate then that may be the cause.
Usually the problem is, out of spec tolerance clutch cover slightly warped flywheel out of spec adjustment pressure plate fingers |

Re: CLutch Chatter
If you have oil on the clutch disc and flywheel there's a cheater fix to temporarily reduce or stop the chatter. Take the floor boards out and remover the inspection cover on the clutch housing. Then with the engine running, trans in neutral and park brake on push the clutch pedal to the floor and spray Brake Kleen between the disengaged clutch and the fly wheel. Spray heavily until it starts dripping out the radius rod socket on the bottom of the trans.
The clutch will be spinning so it might get messy but if oil on the clutch is the problem this should give you some temporary relief from the chatter. If this doesn't help then you may have other problems that need to be diagnosed. |
