Do it in the kitchen; the ovens right there and the heat is more controllable than a torch, plus the lighting's better.

I prefer a pipe over a brass drift, as the chances of getting the gear "cocked" on the shaft are eliminated (unless the end of the pipe is not square).

And the kitchen is where the fridge is, the fridge is where the beer is!!

Heck for years I have been using an old toaster over just put the gear in at max heat for 15 minutes. It will expand just enough to begin going on then use the pipe to complete the installation. Works perfectly every time no damage to the gear and no raised metal between the two surfaces to cause a problem like metal shavings inside the engine if not cleaned properly. The toaster oven comes in handy to warm up cold pizza for lunch also.

Done! Had the BFH and a big drift made up from pipe fittings as backup but it turned out, after heating the gear up to ~ 300 deg F, the gear slid right on! I just made sure it was tapped fully home using a brass hammer & drift. Thanks again to all for your replies!
