My first two tooth I found a serviceable worm gear. I was able to install it with a hammer and sleeve. The second I bought a aftermarket replacement. That one was a nightmare. I suspect the ID was off tolerance.

A general rule when assembling tight fitting components is to accurately allign both pieces and use a constant force. A pneumatic impact device has certain applications this as you found out is not one of them. Intermitently pounding the part to be assembled can deform it and create misallignment. Once the static frictional force between the 2 components is exceeded the assembly will go together. This is best accomplished using a constant force supplied by a hydraulic press.

We have used the drill and tap method with good success
