Thanks, all ... some good and interesting information for this newbie. I’ll hit the road again today and see what I can come up with.

I get the impression that the real 600w oil isn’t necessarily the best, anyway, and perhaps
not worth the trouble of trying to find it.

Thanks, again. Cheers, Dave

That appears to be SAE 140 gear oil, not 250 which is the modern 600 Wt....I bought a gal of SAE 140 from Amazon for $25 or so and free prime shipping

Fill with grease first to seal the leak paths, leave enough room in the steering box for some liquid and pour in the oil of your choice. If you omit the grease, your garage floor and driveway will be well lubricated.

Oh yes it is a lubricate. It also contains zddp that is lacking in modern oils.

I had problems here in France buying 600W for my Model A transmission. In desperation I emailed Castrol Oil Co. They came back with the modern equivalent to 600W is their D140.

I used to use JD cornhead and switched to Penn-rite. I like it better, less gooey less of a mess.

I started using cornhead grease which seems to work very well, 600W wasn't staying in the box. I have a question though - how many pumps of a grease gun to use? I basically pumped it in until my hand got tired, maybe 20 strokes.

What I did was take out one of the bolts and pumped the corn head grease in until it pushed out the old 600w
