Default 32 S&W Speedo Trip

I know what a trip odometer is ,
Why does the S&W only go to 99,
& the purpose of the three steps on the stem,
Or is it not a Trip odometer,
Also was there a extension for the stem or did you reach your hand under dash to reset

I would assume Ford thought that most trips were less than 99 miles. I have never seen an extension to reset. Do you have a copy of "The 1932 Ford Book" from the Early Ford V8 Club (earlyfordv8.org)?
