Default Replacing exterior door handles

I’m trying to replace the outside door handles on my 39 ford deluxe. The replacements have longer shafts which I need to cut. The originals had a piece of the shaft slotted to fit the hole. The new ones do not have the slotted part. Should the new ones still work?
Thanks

Think you need to try to duplicate the slotted sections in your replacements or they will not function correctly.

Yes, Gary is correct - you need to put new slots in the same locations as original ones. That's what I did.
