Lucas Tires (5.25-5.50x17)

I see that Lucas is advertising new tires in the 5.25-5.50x17 size. They are quite inexpensive compared to other tire brands.

Does anyone have any comments about Lucas brand tires? Does anyone know where they are made?

I'm going to buy 4 tires in the next week or so from someone and I'd be interested in any input.

For what it is worth....I was out to their shop last May. I only bought 5 inner tubes but the treatment I received there as a customer was wonderful.
A very nice bunch of folks.

I suggest you call and ask them. I'm sure they will be very helpful.

Bought seven 600:20 Lucas truck tires, tubes and liners a few years ago, they look right and I have had no problems. The folks at Lucas are very helpful and know their stuff. ..B.

I have bought numerous sets of 5.25-5.50 x 17 tires from lucas but they were Denman or Firestone . No info on " LUCAS " brand tires . The Denmans look more like old tread tires but they are shorter than the Firestones so you lose some speed with them . They also seem to be made with softer rubber so they wear a bit faster .The Firestones are made in the US and are much better than the imported Firestones you got in the 80's . I use firestones on cars I drive a lot as they wear a bit better and you run less RPM with them . Not exactly the answer to your question but that's allz weez noze bout dis .

I just put new firestones on both my 33 and 34 ,
I dunt know ,but it seems a lot rolleir going round corners than the old firestones I took off.

I just received two of these Lucas 525/550 17 tires. Nice look but terrible quality control. Both of the tires have distorted beads. One has a significant indentation.

Now its about 18 months after I posted the original question. I bought the Lucas tires and they have been very good. The only thing negative I find with them is that if they have been sitting for a week or so, when I first get going they seem to "thump, thump, thump". The feeling goes away after a mile or so.

Otherwise they are very good, no other complaints.

I know this is a very old thread but im going to be buying a set of tires for a 1934 Ford restoration
Sadly they don't make the Denman tires anymore, I'd love to.put on Firestones but my understanding is they have the post war tread design which won work, the Lester tires don't look very good so I think it narrows it down to the Lucas brand tires which didn't exist in 1934. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The originality of the tread design is at least, if not more important than the brand name and the tread on a Firestone 17" tire is about as far off from the original as you can get. It followed the original tread design by a number of years and what is weird is that it is actually a step backward in tire tread design as it is inferior on wet surfaces to the mid-'30s Firestone tread because water can only escape fore and aft and not out the sides as well unlike the earlier design. If you drive your old Ford a lot, the Firestone tires available currently are about the worst possible choice for safe driving.

At least the Lucas tire has a tread design of the period, namely close to that used by B.F. Goodrich.

If it is a black wall and the right size, I don't think that the judges pay much attention to the tires, nor should they given what's available and what is not. They do pay attention to pre-'40 wsw tires that are not white on both side walls.

Does anyone still make double whitewall tires suitable, and/or somewhat close to the old design for a 32 Phaeton. The ones I have on now are showing their age.

Coker offers a 5.50-18 Firestone double wsw with a late '30s tread design. That seems to be the only choice, but it's way, way better than no choice. One drawback, given its greater width than the original 5.25-18 tire, is that it cannot be used with an original metal tire cover band and face plate in an unaltered welled front fender.
