Re: Smell in car during driving
If you want to thin that thick oil and add a fragrance add some Marvel Mystery oil to the crankcase.

Re: Smell in car during driving
If your battery caps are vented possibly a sealed battery would solve the problem

Re: Smell in car during driving
As H.L. said, marine engines were the first to have "Spark Arresters" (They look like air cleaners, but they have metal fins rather that air filter material) and in front of them was the exit side of the pipe from the breather. It worked like a PCV valve to get rid of breather fumes. Boats were notorious for having engine compartment explosions due to accumulations of fumes. The scuppers didn't quite eliminate the problem so engineers used the vacuum of the engine to suck the stuff through, and burn it off.

Also, it the car was rebuilt 40 some years ago, did they use parts like the current parts you can buy or were they reused, cheap, odd size, etc. that may not give you a clean running engine. Just some crazy thoughts from a guy that knows nothing about this sort of thing.

Re: Smell in car during driving
He sold the car. That must've been some smell. I think some folks should stick to modern cars.

Re: Smell in car during driving
Just one opinion from many past experiences:
"My Model A engine was re-built." ..... or ..... my Kitchen and Bath Room was re-modeled" ....... these statements are really most questionable for experienced, Senior Model A owners: 1. First, who actually "performed" all of the "detailed", precise work; and, 2. Which new and existing materials were properly fitted and installed. Re-built and re-modeled could easily be anything between a fresh coat of paint and/or ........ a total tear out and properly fitted new installation ..... and furthermore performed by a cheap price tipsy mechanic's helper at midnight on Christmas Eve with poor lighting .... or precisely performed by a sober, more costly qualified mechanic in broad daylight. If one went for the most normal Model A owner's Cheap Route and the most heard about Model A owner's "How much I saved Route" ...... suggestion ...... afterwards, just go to the local Army Surplus Store and buy a vintage WWI or vintage WWII gas mask to avoid inhaling smelly Model A fumes from a vintage 86 year old Model A cheap engine. |

Re: Smell in car during driving
I would think that Synthetic oil will not let your rings seat. I would prefer 15-40 oil specked for diesel. The synthetic oil is far to slick for a Model A engine, it would find every small space to leak out. Your smelling blow by, Yest the venting of the pan would help, but changing to regular oil would be my first choice to go to. Just my opinion! Been rebuild and driving old fords since 1958.

It's also apparent that most poster didn't go to the link or they'd know he

Re: Smell in car during driving
Could it be the other side of the engine a leak from the valve cover spitting onto the exhaust down pipe.

I agree. I share the OP's hypersensitivity to some odors. When I line my firewall with foil-faced HVAC duct insulation, I'll stuff the excess in the gaps below the frame extension/floorboard supports. My car is equipped with a waffle exhaust manifold, but a heater is out of the question. Thankfully the f/w is still intact. |
