Radiator Core paint
Should the core of the radiator be finished in Flat Black or Gloss?
Have seen them both ways and wonder what in correct... Mark |

Re: Radiator Core paint
I use Krylon satin black. Now and then, before an important show, I mask off my radiator shell and respray the front of the radiator. Makes a big improvement in the overall look of the car. Put some cardboard in back of the radiator to keep paint out of your engine compartment.

Re: Radiator Core paint
Be careful not to apply to much paint for it will effect your cooling

Re: Radiator Core paint
Yes use a flat black or semi-gloss. A glossy rad will cause it to over heat because it holds the heat in. Originally the rad shops used tar based chassis black on the rads. The closest thing to that is Tremclad or Rustoleum.

if you can find non-fibred roofing cement, mix it with gasoline and spray on thin with a throw-away garden pump sprayer. it will take a long time to dry but you will like the results. for the purists, Gilsonite is also a good coating for new body mounting blocks and the underside of wooden sub-frames. last batch of Gilsonite we made used fibred roof cement then strained it- an incredibly messy inconvenience. if you know of a source for non-fibred roofing cement, please post.

Re: Radiator Core paint
A few years ago I made a calculation for temperature drop across the radiator paint film. The result was that it was negligible. I asked for anyone to double-check my calculation, but nobody volunteered. My conclusion was that the thickness of paint was not important, but that has not been verified by anyone else.

Re: Radiator Core paint
As glenn in camino stated he uses satin black. I have just recently read the Judging Standards and I'm sure it stated satin black. I have a brand new cored radiator and am ready to paint it but don't know if I should use a primer. It is presently raw copper. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for your time. Joe Grobleski |
