Default Lost my father/mentor

Well, it had to happen. Dad finally went to be with his buddies in Heaven this past week. He started me wrenching cars at a very early age. My earliest recolection is learning to rivit brake linings to shoes. He had a verticle device with a lever to set the rivets. I think I was about 8-10 yrs old. The attached photo is a car he built for my younger brother and me in Mother's dining room. It had an old Matag motor for power and a Desota steering wheel. From there I had a Cushman motor scooter that I put a Crosley transmission for better road travel. Then a '49 Chevy and a 53Merc convertable. We always had neat cars around our house as Dad was only 20 years older than me. He sure instilled a set of values that todays generation does not understand. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear of your loss. All of us here feel your sorrow. Your Dad is in a better place now and the best thing to do now is to remember all the good times you had with him.

Jack - So sorry for your loss. My Dad was my mentor as well. When I was in high school, ours was the place 'the guys' gathered to work on cars, etc. Dad was always aroundd if we got stuck or couldn't figure out how to do something. Today, he would be called our "Technical Resource Person". We never did stump him. He's been gone since 1992 and I still miss him. God Bless.

Tough deal & I know the pain . Sounds like you have many good memories to keep him alive in your memory . Lost My Mom in the fall of 96 { I 'm 58 now } but the memories of her & the time spent with her live on in my memory . Such is what we live with . David J

Hey Jack, Sorry for the loss of your dad. My dad has been gone for 20 years . I sure wished he was here now for i have so many questions to ask about these Flatheads. He raced them in the circle track cars in the 50's '. Boy he would tell me some stories! I hope you get thru these hard times. Ken

Sorry for your loss as well. My father started me with old cars restoring a Model A when I was 8 yrs old. I have been having fun with cars for the next 52 years. My dad is still alive and I try to enjoy everyday I can with him.

My condolences, Jack.

Some will scoff at this story, and that's okay, but the event is real. About three years after my father/mentor passed, I was struggling to get an old Bronco to run right. (I had 'tuned it' two years earlier, and though it ran awful afterward, I was too busy to seriously address it again, until the above-mentioned time.)

All other things were put out of my mind, and I checked and rechecked all the normal components and settings... for perhaps hours. It was quiet, in the wee (dark) hours, and I was leaning on the radiator support and concentrating.

My father said, "Make sure the vacuum line from the carburetor to the distributor advance is above the throttle plates." I heard the voice as clearly as if he had been at my elbow.

I checked, and, in my 'tuning' I had removed some of the smog lines. I had indeed placed this line in the incorrect location. I changed it, and the old gal lit up like gangbusters!

Was dad's voice then and there, or did the words repeat from the past... from a time when he had been coaching? I can't say for certain, but I prefer to believe the voice was then and there. It sure sounded like it.

May you be likewise comforted in your memories (and more?).

God bless.
