Rear Main Leaks or Transmission Leak

With an inserted engine, and a small puddle of oil on the floor, is it more likely a rear main leak, or a transmission leak?
Not my car, but attached is a picture.

I have no experience in this area. But with a rear main leak--and presuming that the main bearing cap drain is OK (big IF, I know)--is simply replacing the inserts enough to fix the problem? Or would this require more repair possibly at this stage?

Simply replacing the inserts most certainly will probably not fix it. It can be many things - leaking around the cap, the bolts, the oil pan seal... You have to make sure to see what you are getting into.

Do not overfill transmission, it will leak as well as engine....

i just went through all that on mine.

smell, texture, and color may give you an idea.

i put mine in the air, safely, washed the area, then started the car and let it run. and watched from under the car. make sure you have the car supported safely if you do that.
i had a few very minor drips of engine oil.

i put the car down then took it for a drive.
i had lots of oil dripping out. turns out it was from the tranny.

take note of were its coming from. do the tests again and you will probably be able to figure if its the tranny or engine.

my leak was from a bad poorly installed tower gasket and front case gaskets.
if yours is a tranny leak maybe check those gasket before you pull the tranny out.

a few small drops on a nice shiny concrete floor will spread and look like a major oil spill.
clean the concrete and watch the drips it may be just a few. then spreading out.
