Default Speedo Inaccurate

Hi, I have a 1931 Town Sedan and the speedometer reads about half of the speed I am actually driving. Any ideas? Thanks for any help. Dave

Dave, I had the same problem with my 30 Town Sedan when I bought it. Actual speed was about 2x what the speedo was showing. I sent it to a guy that advertises here in the Swapmeet. I think he charged me like $40. to adjust itm. Now it's only like 1-2 mph off. I think he calls himself Govenuer in his ads.

Can anyone out there advise what the possible problem in the speedometer might be?? What is causing it to show half speed??

Thanks!!

Either the magnet is very weak or the wheel may be dry and binding. I can't believe the adjustment could be that far off. How is the odometer? You need the miles to be accurate first, then the speed. The odometer is made accurate by the driven gear on the torque tube. It needs to have the correct number of teeth to match the tire size and rear end ratio.

Thanks Tom!! The car belongs to a friend that purchased the car a year ago. The speedometer unit was replaced with a Snyders rebuilt unit about 5 years ago, and always worked very well. I just didn't know where to tell him to look. The torque tube gear assembly, or the speedometer unit inside. I have never seen one work at half speed.

Thanks again!!

If the gear on the torque tube is correct for the rear end ratio, the cable will revolve 1,000 times in 1 mile. If it does this the odometer will be right. If the odometer is correct and the speedo wrong, it is the magnet or its relation to the "needle".
