Default Water Pump

Ok, I have a problem. I’m a pack rat and need to clean out a few items. Do the original water pumps from my 40 V8 have any monetary value or are they just good for door stops. I have problems throwing anything away.

If the ones you have in have been there a while send your cores to Skip and have them rebuilt, replace them.. Just a thought .

In other words - core value? Very little to zero value.
I have listed a number of them (six) on eBay for $1 for all six. All shipped within a large flat rate box. NO takers for $1.
I ended up tossing them along with a dozen or so earlier ones.

I know what you mean about being a pack rat and tossing anything that looks like a vintage Ford part. I installed a pair of new pumps from Speedway a couple of years ago and can forget about water pump problems. Skip Haney is also a good source for rebuilt, but in the end you still have "rebuilt" pumps. When you compare acquisition cost, the new ones are far superior to anything rebuilt. By the way, to prove how hard it was to let go, I just scrapped 20 flathead water pumps 2 months ago that I had been holding on to for 25 years!!

You all just helped me with my decision, looks like time to scrap these things.

I believe we must all, myself included, realize this hobby is not becoming more popular folks interested and more parts becoming available, values decrease. Simple law of economics.
I feel bad when trashing stuff more so as it is all a part of history - not necessarily any monetary value.

Ring Skip and see if he wants cores rather than just throw them out

Mike,

Please do not throw away any original '32-34 water pumps or original '35 or '36 right side pumps.

I like to use temp gauges on both sides so I save any head mounted pumps. I am using one now that I drilled and brazed on a collar to get a sender in. Cooler to use 2 right side, greasable

Just to clarify my comments, I don't toss any head mounted water pumps! They definitely are kept and recycled i.e., they can even be re-used on Model A's with slight modifications.

Look to the difference between original and aftermarket pulleys and pump body. Unusual early (21 stud) pump RH body with heater hose connections cast into the body. Make sure you know what your going to trash.

Didn’t know that about model A, recently acquired one (A) motor and
May see what parts I can throw together to use it for a flivver

Don't throw away any of the 79-8501 or 79-8502 dual pulley pumps. These are for '37 through '48 trucks and have bearings instead of bushings. They are sought after by folks who want to mount a supercharger on their flathead.

Based on your picture, that appears to be a left side '36 Ford water pump. If it's an original '36 pump, it will have a 68-xxxx part number cast into one side. If someone is doing a high point restoration on their 36 Ford, it might be important to them to get that pump as a rebuildable core.
If/when I'm judging cars at an Early Ford V-8 Club Meet, for say a Dearborn Award, I look for the original part number on water pumps. If there is no part number, points are deducted. I've personally sold many original '32 to '53 water pumps as rebuildable cores.....and personally, I'd give original ford parts away before I would consider trashing them.

Those pumps will fit from '37 to '48 flathead engines.
