Default 1947 Straight 6 resources

So I have been searching and searching the net for parts for this motor, and 99% of what I am finding is for the V8's (such as this forum). Anyone have any suggestions on straight 6 forums or suppliers for parts? I'm kind of scratching my head over here because nobody seems to have everything I'm looking for and I don't like to order stuff piece by piece. Thanks for the help!

Take a look at www.fordsix.com. There is a vintage engine section in the forum there. Joblot shows a lot for the sixes. You may want to check the napaonline site. It's surprising what thay can provide.

Joblot, vendors that have some NOS stashed like C&G Ford and Carpenter, and probably talk with Dick Spadaro on here. The stuff is around but is generally not in the catalog because of low demand.
Ford produced a good ovehaul manual if you 6 is the G type with front distributor. If H type I think bulletins anf the '49 type manuals will cover your needs pretty well.

I appreciate the links guys. I finally found a gasket kit through Egge. I couldn't add it to my cart, that's why I thought they didn't have it. Called, and sure enough, they did!

Hi ;California Bill, had a chapter on hopping these up in the red and white book on V8 speed. I had a 254" M series six that is the same externally, optional in F6 trucks 49-51. 'Bill' had it bored and stroked to 304" in his book. newc

I bought everything to rebuild my '51 "H" series six from Kanter. It was all new old stock in the original boxes, no import crap.

Newc, I'll have to look into that. I'm not going to hop it u[p for now. I'm trying to do this with very little cash. I plan on using my resources and doing research and spending more time than money right now. I'm not worried about speed, just worried about going and stopping. Doesn't matter how fast I go, as long as I can stop. hahaha

Henry, I ordered a MACs catalog a few weeks ago, still waiting on it. But I have been browsing online.

Meric, I don't know if I'm going to get that far into the motor right now. Maybe eventually. But I'd like to see if I can get it to run as is. BUT, I hate to pass up NOS Ford parts. Can you please shoot me a PM with what you have, and maybe a price on what you want for them. I wonder if shipping will kill me.

39wdy, email will be sent as soon as I'm done replying here. Much appreciated. I've been looking for one.

Ken, I'll shoot you a PM. At this point I know I need gaskets, which I will most likely order from Egge. And then maybe a fuel pump, water pump, thermostat housing, and who knows what else as I go along here.

amodel, seems like "H" series are much more popular. Hunting for G parts is an Easter egg hunt.

Also, does anyone have an actual picture (not a diagram), or know where I can find one, of a close up view of the top of the motor with the head off? When I took the head off, the water passages were clogged, but because its been sitting so long, its kind of hard to get the stuff out. So in order for me to see what needs to be removed, I'd like to see what the water passages are supposed to look like.

I know that since it has been sitting for so long,t hat I should take it completely apart, but I just dont have the $ for that right now. And I have been assured by several people who looked at it, that said to flush all that stuff out, and it should run.

My instinct is to completely tear it down, but I have only really worked on "newer" 70's and above small block Chevy/Fords/Mopars or big blocks, all of which were being built for power, never to just "get something running". I know it doesnt matter what make/model a motor is, that if it has been sitting so long, that it should be redone. But I have seen many a guys get motors running after years with very little work done to them other than a little cleaning and flushing. So I'm basically arguing with myself on whether to just clean it up inside a bit, then flush it out, do a few new gaskets, put fluids in, and crank her over. OR, to tear it down. This is a budget build (for now), so I'm hoping some of you will be able to give me some advice.

use a pick and a magnet to pull the rust junk out. Air pressure to blow stuff out as well. Open and remove the block drain plug and give that hole some air.

I this a great board or what!. Lots of help here for sure!!!

I have some NOS genuine Ford parts for that motor---gaskets, rings, pins, pistons, bearings, rings, valves etc. Very cheap.

I used a long screwdriver to stick down the water passages and bust up the gunk, then made me an adapter for my shop vac with a 1/2 inch clear hose . sucked all the stuff out, put it back together. ran it for a whole then flush out a couple of times all good now. Smiley

If I remember correctly on that 6 cyl when you remove the water pump there is a long baffle that can be removed . Its purpose was to carry the water to the rear of the engine Im guessing .
