Default 1934 steering column tube re-install

One of my 34 Fords is simple, unrestored, driver-fun quality. I removed the steering column, intact, for a thorough rebuild of the steering box. I do not have a key for the steering lock in this car and have never had luck with a locksmith being able to pick this lock. After the complete rebuild, I cannot get the steering shaft tube re-installed to the appropriate, all-the-way down position. The hollow tube seems to jamb with two inches left to be covered above the steering box. What am I doing wrong? Thx!

There are several locksmiths here on the Barn that should be able to help you with the lock issue. Now would be a good time to look into it if the column is still out. Should just need the key code and if the ignition is original to the car, the door cylinder should match the ignition.

I would drill and tap the lock retaining pin and remove the lock. The lock has a code on the side and a locksmith can make a key from the code. He would not even need the lock
This is assuming the lock pin is what is holding it. You might not have the column aligned right onto the box.

Could it be ,Your locking pin is spring loaded and its going down until it contacts the looking coller , its normally retracted by the key . punch it around or drill out the brake off bolt to remove the column drop then refit it .Or feed a tube down the shaft tube to hold back the spring loaded pin until it slips over ,this would need to be just a little larger than the the coller
