Default Rust in the bead of 21" rims

I have some rust inside the bead (both sides) of my 1929 21" wheels. You can hear it when turning them. Otherwise these are great rims, not pitted or bent. Is this a problem? And if so how can I fix it before painting them.
Thanks, Greasespot

Drill 4 - 3/16" holes on the inside of edge of the bead next to the tire. Blow rust out the best you can with compressed air. Inject either Bill Hirch fuel tank liner compound or possibly an epoxy quick drying paint into a couple of the holes. Cover holes temporarly with masking tape, and rotate rim until compound has become tacky enough or dry. This procedure will adhere to the rust particles, bonding them to the inside of the rim rolled bead. Fill holes with JB Weld. Worked for us......

That is a great answer!

Sometimes the edge bead is open just enough that if you have LOTS OF PATIENCE, you can rotate the rim to get the rust flakes to shake out on their own without having to drill any holes at all.

I did the same as Glenn C., but with a larger hole, POR 15, and MIG'd over and ground down when finished. No more rust rolling inside. On another wheel (a spare 19") it always had rust flakes until it came it's turn to be mounted. After a few miles and a little red dust cloud, the rust became dust and fell out of the rim. I don't trust that wheel for anything but a short term spare.

GREAT TIP on the 21" wheels!

ON THE OTHER HAND HOWEVER...never, NEVER think you will cure the rust problem by dipping 21" wheels! I did so back in 1978 (my neophyte days) thinking what a great way to clean the wheels in getting them ready for painting.

About a year later after painting and mounting my tires, I noticed some kind of whitish, liquidish salt type of material oozing between the tire and the rim. What it was, as you may guess, the "stripping material" which entered the hollow bead of the rims and over the cource of that year finally came out.

It was back to square one.

Pluck,
I had the same problem with some brake hubs/drums. I had them dipped and for a number of years - maybe 10, the white powdery stuff (kind of looked like battery acid) came out between the hub and the drum. The hubs/drums looked nice, but the white stuff was a real pain as it kept coming out. I learned that anything that has seams or joints - don't dip. Now I sandblast or beadblast everything.

Has anyone ever used a Needle Scaler to remove rust on wheels?

Never tried a needle scaler......might be pretty harsh, but then again it might work great! Hearing protection for fifty feet though.
