Default Valve noise?

I've noticed a noise in both of my engines, more often when cold. The noise sounds like a valve tick but it will tick for a few seconds and then go away and come back in no particular rythm.Has anyone had this?I thought it was odd that both do it ,the 49 as adjustables but I dont think the 41 does.Maybe sticking valves should I try MMO ?I have not been using it maybe I should.....

In the case of a really quite engine the fuelpump can fool you. The sound will come-and-go as the pump restores fuel to the carb and then rests for a time, only to begin another session of carb filling, etc. etc. etc..

I'll go with JWL on the push rods but with this new gas you need a 1/2 pint of MMO in every tank of gas or the valves will slightly stick. Drop to 10 MPH in high gear and pull out. If the engine stumbles and is tuned up properly it is most likely sticky valves. I would use the whole pint on the first treatment when the gas is low in the tank. Drive it 10 miles and try the pull out from 10 MPH and it should smooth out. Then go fill the tank. You can take a piece of hose 3' long and listen on the engine and hear where the noise gets loud.
