Fuel tank/instrument panel ID
Greetings all,
I'm going to use the fuel tank from this cowl for my '30-'31 wagon project. This cowl was used on a Gordon Smith air compressor and was originally part of a Murray body (M654 3XXX). The cowl band uses 4 carriage bolts on each side, plus clips on top. Can you guys tell if this tank used the round or oval instrument panel based on this picture and information? I can take more pictures and measurements later if needed. Thanks! Zim |

Not really sure how you summised that as I would tend to think with that particular cowl band that this would be an early cowl which would have used the earlier oval speedometer. What am I missing??

I would rebuild the GS compressor and find another gas tank if it were mine. A picture of the other side would help answer your question about speedo easier.

Brent is correct. That is a very, very early cowl section as one can tell by the "full" length of the cowl band. Second, the tank goes along with the cowl as being a very, very early 1930 tank. It was generation # 1 as far as the 30-31 tanks are concerned. The reason there are "clips" for holding the cowl band in place on the top is because there are no embossings on the tank itself to secure the A-140298 Cowl Moulding Assembly to the tank. This tank, as Brent says, utilizes the 28-29 instrument panel with the "oval" speedometer. You can read all about it in a soon to be released Model A News (MARC). Pluck |

Thanks for your replies and helpful information. I don't have anything else from the GS, but this tank is extremely clean and straight.
