Question Emergency brake return spring orientation

I have one original emergency brake return spring on the car, two new springs and no instructions.

I figure the U shaped end goes around the lever, but where does the straight end go?

The spring that's still on the car would indicate that it goes between the radius rod and the brake backing plate.

Normally I'd just copy, but you might notice there's a missing bolt on the emergency lever, the U shaped end isn't actually around the emergency brake lever and, after much head scratching, I discovered the service brake levers had been fitted on the wrong sides. Plus, it's way to easy to fit the spring like this.

Should the straight tail be pressing against the boss that the service brake cam shaft sits in? If so, are there any tricks for installing it that way (I tried and it was impossible enough that I felt it might be the right way)?

You are correct about the straight tail resting against the boss, and yes it is difficult to get it in place!

Here are a couple of pictures, one showing the spring installed and one showing the tool I made to pull the spring into place....the tool is about 7" long....

Sometimes to be able to successfully use the search function you need to already be aware of the thread you are looking for.

Rusty went back 6 years to find that thread, and he was the original poster...

Often if you click on "search", then "advanced search" in the same box, It will take you to a page that allows you to narrow down the search.

you could put "emergency" in the keyword box, then highlight "Model A" in the Search in Forum box and that narrows your search a bit.

Personally I have better luck with google...I put "Model A Ford Emergency brake spring ford barn" in the search window and results are pretty specific.
